On March 4, 2011 (Friday), HKBIO held its First Spring Dinner with the support from the industry, the academia and the Government. Ms. Janet WONG Wing-Chen (JP), Commissioner for Innovation and Technology was our Guest of Honor, and Mr. CAO Gou-Ying, Deputy Inspector of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R., Dr. David Y. K. WONG, President of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong were also our special guests for the night.
Professor Albert Cheung-Hoi YU, HKBIO's Chairman, expressed his vision for the development of Biotechnology in Hong Kong. Professor YU stressed on the importance of having Biotechnology as a supporting pillar of Hong Kong's economy as well as promoting Hong Kong as a globally recognized city in Biotech. With the support from Government, existing sound infrastructure in transport, legal and accreditation systems, and talents from the industry, Hong Kong could certainly be the Testing and Certification Centre for Asia, especially in the fields of Food Safety and Chinese Medicinal Materials.
Our Guest of Honor, Ms. Janet WONG Wing-Chen (JP), echoed with the Government's promising and continuous support to this prosperous field in the coming years. According to Ms. WONG, the Government is giving more emphasis on different approaches to help this budding industry in Hong Kong. Funding will also be given to 12 key laboratories; most of them are very closely related to life sciences. Biotechnology is surely the world industry of the upcoming century.
HKBIO's Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Terence Lok-Ting LAU, followed up with highlights of past events organized by HKBIO. Together with several rounds of Luck Draw and Traditional Chinese Music Performance, the Spring Dinner ended with laughter and smiling faces of our hundred guests.
